Configure Machine task failed

Hi all,

I restored an image into am empty virtual machine with VMware Workstation 10. In order to make it bootable I used the VMware Converter Standalone (5.1.2, with the latest version I get same error message). I used configure machine to do it but I get an error message during execution: FAILED: Fault.ReconfigurationFault.summary.

Does anyone knows how to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Multiple partitions to multiple volumes P2V

Hi there,

At work we're working on a Windows Server 2008 SP2 (SCCM 2007 R3) P2V to solve a disk space problem before upgrading to SCCM 2012 (later next year).

I've starting to prepare this P2V but the server has a complex partition design, which kinda look like the attached screenshot : multiple volumes, multiple partitions including extended partitions.

Target volume configuration would be something like :

- C: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (30 -> 60 GB)

- E: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (1 -> 5 GB)

- F: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (1 -> 5 GB)

- G: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (1 -> 5 GB)

- H: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (1 -> 5 GB)

- I: - 1 on one volume, 1 VMDK (1 -> 5 GB)

I've launched Converter on our preproduction environment and I can't see an option allowing me to "split" those partition into multiple volumes...

Another option would be to multiple copy this volume after the P2V and delete E F G H and I on the first, C F G G I on the next, C E G H I, etc etc.

Any idea ?

Regards,

Sebastien

Stop converter from deleting a failed job?

Sometimes the converter fails at 95% or above, the VM is usually repairable, but if the converter fails, it automatically deletes the vm that it created, how can I stop it from doing that.

I am using Converter 5.0 to 5.5 versions.

Thanks

in vsphere 4.0 the converter was shown as a installer but 5.5 doesnt show the converter tool in the installer for vcenter.

P2V from Hyper V with Direct Access Disks

Hi,

Our current Exchange Machine is running on Hyper V I would like to migrate this into our production vmware environment. The problem is that the hyper V machine has direct access to two physical targets (located in the same machine) which host the exchange database and log files.

Is there anyway I can P2V this? I know there will be some additional work involved but I'm thinking its got to be better than an Exchange rebuild.

Thanks

VSS backup and security when converting over the network

$

Hello

I am remotely converting machines, from a live "hot" XP box.

Does anyone have any thoughts on security "over the wire" here?

There seems to be no documentation discussing any security/encryption of data that is backed up via VSS, and SMB isnt encrypted by default IIRC. Backup shares required at both ends is obviously an issue, but password protected in theory (and practice in this case).

The only other part that could play a role would be the software you are using, i.e. VMware converter, so does that have any security/encryption added during its conversations over the network?

Regards

Ben

XenServer 5.6 - CentOS/RHEL (xen-kernel) VMS to ESXi 5.5

Well. My first question here, has anybody done a migration from XenServer 5.6 to ESXi?

I can run the converter fine, and I'll get a VM on the other side I know this won't boot as the VM is using the xen-kernel. The target machine I've been testing with I've installed the default kernel and then run the converter process. I'm trying to boot other side with the distro's .iso ( in this case centos 5.3 ) and repairing the grub configuration, however this is where I'm stuck.

I'll get a number of errors, however I think this is due to the way the disks operate. In Xen, these are IDE devices and the migration process configures these using a SAS Logic controller and some "magic stuff" happens converting my /dev/xvda to a /sda device.

My last attempts have got this at a kernel panic - "stuck.setuproot moving /dev failed" and then init dies.

As most people have figured out. There's tons of doco moving off ESXi to Xen, but not the other way around!

VMWare Converter not picking up local 173 GB raid 5 disk on WIndows 2003 32 bit

Hi

We have a Dell 6850 running hardware raid. Two drives are raid 1 for operating system. The remainder of the disks are in a raid 5 group for SAP data. For reasons unknown, when we run the converter tool, version 5.5.3 we can see and select the C: (OS disk) and all of our 17 SAM luns. Low and behold our J: disk is not in the list.

Anyone see this before and can you provide some guidance?

Kind Regards

Jeff

Hi,

I'm trying to convert a Linux Physical Machine with the vCenter Converter Standalone 5.5.3 but it always fails at the beggining (VmCreationFault.summary).

Everything's ok concerning communications between the physical machine and the Converter, as for the vCenter.
In the worker log I get these issues :

[09488 error 'Default'] VmTransformerImpl::SeparateBootDisk: Unable to find VirtualDisk for diskId=fake-disk-from-vg(vg0)

[09488 error 'Default'] TargetVmManagerImpl::CreateVM: Vm creation failed with error Invalid argument : VmTransformerImpl::SeparateBootDisk: Unable to find VirtualDisk for an active volume

Here is what I get with the df command :

/dev/mapper/vg0-root  1,1G  594M  465M  57% /

/dev/sda1              99M   57M   37M  61% /boot

none                  1,5G     0  1,5G   0% /dev/shm

/dev/mapper/vg0-home  3,0G  1,2G  1,7G  42% /home

/dev/mapper/vg0-sauv  9,9G   90M  9,3G   1% /home/d/sauve

And the fdisk -l

/dev/sda1   *           1          13 104391   83  Linux

/dev/sda2 14        8650    69376702+ 8e  Linux LVM

Do you know what to do to pass this conversion ?

Changes to files made by host on mounted volumes not seen in the player

I have a 64-bit Ubuntu VM with a Windows 7 host volume mounted.

If I make changes to a file on the mounted volume from the host, those changes are not seen in the VM.

I am assuming the VM is caching things.

If that is the case, is there any way to force the VM to clear its disk cache?

P2V windows server 2003

Hi All,

I'm trying to do P2V to one server and I just can't pass the 1% error.

" converter.fault.ManagedDiskOpenFault "

I've tried all the solution that I found out there: opening all restriction trough my firewall, all the necessary ports are open, I've added to the server local host file the names and IP of the esxi's.

I also uploaded here the log files.

can anyone see anything else that I overlooked?
