VmWare converters disk content was old data

$

Hello,

I am using  ESXi 5.5.0 and want to copy a virtual machine from ESX to Vm workstation.
For this I have used VM-converter standalone.

When I started the VM after conversion on my desktop I was surprised: The hard disk shows old data.

It looks like a old snapshot but I am not using any snapshots.

Has anybody an idea where this behavior comes from?

Karl

We have CloneZilla images of Windows 2008 Server and would like to restore them to ESXi 5.5.

The converter release notes do not list ClonZilla as one of the supported images like Ghost, Aconis,,

Are there any options / tools to get the CloneZilla image onto vSphere 5.,5?

Vcenter Converter 5.5 and V2V machines Hard disk drives : No usable volumes found on disk

Hello everybody

I try to convert a virtual machine Centos 6.6 executed by KVM to vCenter 5.5 (vCSA)  and ESXi 5.5.0u2.

I have successfully convert and execute it but I found a error on the second disk.

On my KVM, I have 2 disk, the first one to 5GB and the second on to 20 GB.

The second partition named /dev/vbd is detected by vmware converter on the Source System / view sources details.

Unfortunately, this program discovery the disk named "disk2" with 20 GB but it log "No usable volumes found on disk".

I didn't understand why it do it because the partition /dev/vbd used the ext4 FS.

Someone can help me to solve this problem

Thanks in advance

Convert Hyper-V VM to VMware through command line

     Hi all,

Is therer a PowerCli or some sort of command line / powershell command to use the VMWare converter?

I use the vmware powercli to deploy VMs and other operations that I insert on my scripts and was wondering if this converter has that option, to run the order to convert via command line instead of a wizard that requires user input and can't be automated.

Cheers all

Hello friends, how are you?

I'm trying to convert a physical machine with Redhat 3 have the latest version of VMware vCenter Converter (5.5.3)

On the machine with Redhat I have the firewall disabled, the IP as the name resolves well and are within the same network as the host.

At one point, after partition and format the disk on the target server, I get the following error in the log:

Can someone help me?

Thanks a lot!

Looking for advice on P2V conversion of SBS 2011 Std, Exchange 2010, Sharepoint, SQL

$

Greetings,

I am somewhat of a VMware novice, but currently have two (soon to be three) ESXi hosts under my belt. They are all at separate locations.

I was not involved in the existing server in any way prior to this, but now it is mine. I was "thrown to the wolves" after the fact.

This will be the first "production" P2V conversion I am attempting. Though it will be the only VM on the host at this time,  I do anticipate further VMs on this host in the future.

Given my restrictions, I would like to know the easiest way to do this conversion. The last two hosts I did were new installs (Server 2012 Essentials and Std), not conversions.  Though, just for learning purposes,  I DID do standalone P2V conversions of both of the existing physical servers, but never put them into production.  I can't remember if I actually spun them up or not. It was a while ago.  I think I did.  They were both SBS 2003 physical servers.  For a variety of reasons I do not have the luxury of a new install with this new system.

New host:  HP ML350p Gen 8. 64 GB RAM, 1+ TB usable RAID 5 internal storage. 2 Xeon 6 core CPUs.  ESXi 5.5.0 Upd 2. The latest HP firmware updates.

Existing physical server:  Dell something.  1 Xeon 3060, 4 GB RAM, 300 GB non redundant internal storage (one 300 gb volume).  Windows SBS 2011 Std. Running Exchange Server (2010) and SQL for SBS monitoring & SharePoint.

The existing physical server is the only server on the network, is (obviously) a domain controller, and the network is "flat". One subnet, no routing.

As mentioned above I have run the converter on a couple of other machines, They were both single servers, on single subnets but neither of them were running  Exchange, SQL or Sharepoint.

The various forums and and information I could find on the net has for the most part, been conflicting and sometimes confusing as well.

I did find a couple of posts that mentioned stopping both Exchange and SQL before the conversion. This seems to make sense for obvious reasons.  What else do I need to know of/should be aware of/watch out for etc.

Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide.

Hello,

I am trying to convert my Win 8.1 64bit Machine to a running VM.

I am using vCenter Converter Standalone 5.5.3 and VM Workstation 10.0.4

I had a problem with my PCI Devices so I followed this instruction:Re: VMware opens and quickly closes a virtual machine

Now I am getting a BSOD while loading windows with following message: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Trying to get it running on two machines: HP 2760p and Dell D630. I heard it can be a driver problem so I tried to boot in failsafemode.Same Error. What can I do about this?

Thank You and sorry for my bad english.

Copy split disk VM from Workstation to vCenter

Hey,

I have a split disk VM 8TB split in to 2TB disks. But when I use the converter to move this to vcenter it combines it as one 8TB disk.

Is there a way to get it to create the split disk on vCenter 5.5. Or can I create split disk vm's on vCenter 5.5 directly?

Thanks

Hi,

I need to virtualize a linux server running SLES 11-SP1 at my work place. I thought that VMware converter could do the job and therefore I downloaded the Open Source VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.5.3 (file VMware-converter-5.5.3-oss.tgz), which I planned to install on my workstation, to create the virtual machine from the server's system disk. However now I realize from reading the documentation that apparently the software can only be installed on a Windows machine. Is that right? I also found that a previous version, ie. vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1, could run on linux machines (RedHat, SLES, Ubuntu,...). Is this the most recent version that could run on linux?

Untaring the file VMware-converter-5.5.3-oss.tgz generates a VMware-converter-5.5.1-oss directory which contains the following subdirectories:

These do not look like for windows, so is there any documented way to build the Converter on linux from these?

Thanks for any comments,

Automating Converter Standalone using Converter-cli.exe

$

0

Hi,

I have worked out that this must be possible because of the inclusion of converter-cli.exe with Converter 5.0.1 Build 875114, plus I've got very close but not quite close enough!  I have vCenter 5.0 and ESXi 5.0.0 hosts.

I am using the following XML and it's submitting the job to Converter with what looks like to be the correct details but fails straight away with the error:

FAILED: The source configuration file is invalid, corrupted or not recognized.

I've checked logs in the following locations but nothing gives me any clues as to what isn't quite right:

C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\logs

C:\Users\All Users\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\logs

C:\Users\XXAdmin\AppData\Local\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client\Logs

Anywhere else I can look?

My XML file (p2v.xml):

<p2v version="2.2" xmlns="http://www.vmware.com/v2/sysimage/p2v" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"

xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.vmware.com/v2/sysimage/p2v p2vJob.xsd" xsi:type="P2VJob">
  <source>
    <hostedSpec networkPassword="domainpassword" networkUsername="domain\username" path="PHYSICALSERVER"/>
  </source>
  <dest>
    <managedSpec datastore="Datastore XXXX" folder="Temp" host="HOST1" resourcePool="" vmName="NEWVM">
      <creds host="VCENTER" port="0" type="sessionId" username="domain\username" password="domainpassword" />
    </managedSpec>
  </dest>
  <importParams diskType="VMFS" preserveHWInfo="true" removeSystemRestore="false" targetProductVersion="PRODUCT_MANAGED">
    <nicMappings/>
    <diskLocations/>
  </importParams>
  <postProcessingParams/>
</p2v>

I'm running the command: C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone>converter-cli -s C:\Temp\p2v.xml

I feel sure that this is just a minor issue with the xml input configuration file and if I knew the correct syntax or had an example file I could get it working. I can't find one anywhere. Should the datastore be the name vSphere/ESXi knows it as rather than the name I see in the vSphere Client?

Please help!

Thanks

Hello everybody

We have 3 BlueOnyx on 5106R version. We want to convert to virtual machines the 3 physical machines.

We try to do it using the Vmware vConverter 5.5.3 to convert the 3 powered-on Linux machines.

I see the ssh connection and sftp connection using wireshark but I can't see the "View source details" information.

Vmware vConverter sent the error message fault.SysinfoQueryLinuxFault.summary (seeing in attachement).

BlueOnyx is based on the Centos 5 32 bits so I installed the same Centos version for try to convert it to virtual machine using Vmware vConverter.

I have successfully this conversion so I didn't understand what is the problem.

If someony can help me to do it ...

Thanks in advance for your help

VMWare Standalone Converter 5.5.3 fails to migrate V2V with active source firewall

$

Hi VMWare experts ^^

I recently installed the Standalone Converter 5.5.3 to operate a VM migration from an ESX 5.1  to another ESX 5.1 ... they're not currently part of a vSphere architecture vCenter.

The source VM is a Windows 2008 R2 server standing on the source ESX.

The Converter is operating from a Windows 2008 R2 VM standing on the target ESX.

I select the "Powered on machine" option, set the correct IP, admin account (Domain or local makes no difference), password and OS family.

This is only working when the firewall is dropped down ... no matter what are the rules you create on your firewall. Even setting all the ports and services allowed on every profiles makes no difference (!!!)

I have read a number of technical subjects about this and still have no clue...

Recommended ports from VMWare are mainly the "File and printer sharing" windows ports (TPC/UDP 137,138,139,445,5355 etc ... + 443 ? 9089 ? 9090 ? 902 ?)

I have tried to disable SSL from the converter configuration file...

After a while ... I have tried to enable all the ports to check if I was missing an unknown port ... but no way

Here is part of the log I get from the Converter:

[01652 error 'Ufa.HTTPService'] Failed to read request; stream <io_obj p:0x016e6484, h:-1, <pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-server-soap'>, <pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-server-soap'>>, error: class Vmacore::TimeoutException(Operation timed out)

[ADS] GetTokenInformation failed: 1312

We notice that it is using local named pipes and that seems to fail ... I've read a subject on Microsoft KB about that and suggests to allow File and Printer sharing again ... but still no way ...

This is rather frustrating ... seems to be only a question of Windows Firewall since It works when dropped down but why and what is the trick ?

Once again Microsoft inside secret ?

Any help is welcomed... and diserves the tile of Expert ^^

Regards

What's the best way to remove the team after the conversion?  You can't open the Broadcom utility because no adapters exist.  If you try to remove the BASP Virtual Adapter from the device manager it says "failed to uninstall the device.  The device may be required to boot up the computer"
