Why does the Vmware converter 5.1 take so much time

Hi,

I am using Vmware Converter 5.1 to convert a 80 Gb vm to resize it. It is showing the estimated time of completion in 13 and half hours i need to convert several other VM's in my environment of higher size but am skeptical as they are business critical and i can keep them shut down for a long time . Also, these VM's have a huge size in matter of disk space and memory usage. I need to know any way to acclerate the process . Also, i would be extremely grateful if any one can tell me whether i can resize a Rhel VM to reduce physical disk usage.

Thanks and regards

info.owner bug in the 5.x standalone converters

$

I've tried this now in 5.0.1 and 5.1 converters, and the problem happens when using a domain account OR using the root login for a standalone machine (that is attached to vCenter).  EVERY time I try to convert a machine from P2V, I get the following error: "A specified parameter was not correct. info.owner"  The release notes say that this is due to domain login credentials and the workaround is to use local authentication.  Trying that (as 'root') still doesn't work.

When is this bug scheduled to be fixed?  And/or is there another workaround?  This is very frustrating, as there are many machines we're trying to decom, but we can't do so until we've moved them to our VM cluster setup (as the images are still required).

P2V conversion Window2 SP2 (NOT R2) supported/possible ?

Hi,

I have to do a P2V conversion of  several Windows 2003 SP2 (not R2)  Standard Edition servers. Some servers are domain controllers, while other servers running MS SQL 2005 with large databases (700 GB - 1 TB).

I prefer to do a hot conversion or are there reasons tot do a cold conversion. Of course database will be taken offline before start of conversion.

The release notes of VMware Standalone converter says it only supports Windows 2003 R2 SP2  not  just Windows 2003 SP2. Can anyone confirm P2V conversion of Windows 2003 SP2 (not R2) is also possible ?

I know it is not a best practice to do a P2V conversion of Domain Controllers, but can it be done or it to risky ?

Please advice,

Martin

Vmware server 2 to esxi 5.1 with standalone converter 5.1 deletes ip configuration

Hi friends,

I want to migrate to esxi server from vmware server 2. I use vmware standalone converter to convert and upload existing vmwareserver 2.0 VM to new esxi server. I properly shutdown vmwareserver 2 guest and it has vmware tools installed.

problem is,  converted  VM  (is web hosting machine) looses all ip configuration and tries to get ip from DHCP server. also as I understand converter openes firewall, re-creates @0 file and removes all routes.

I see that there's no option to move esxi vithout some convertion process. Even I copy vmdk files to datastore still they need to be converted.

but I need to keep existing IP configuration. Trying to re-configure IPs is a pain and also I dont even know what else converter changes.

what do you suggest ?

HP Elitebook 8460p with Win7 Pro 64bit... Can't create VM

I've made several attempts to create a VM based on my HP Elitebook 8460p. So far I've had no success.

The conversion appears to work, but when I try and start the machine, Windows gets to the login screen and then bluescreens about 15 seconds later. The keyboard is not responsive before the bluescreen occurs.

I'm using VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone v5.1.0 build-1087880 to do the conversion and VMWare Player 5.0.0 build 812388 to run the VM.

The first run bluescreens with a 0x00000007 complaining about hpqkbfiltr.sys. Every other time after this, I still get the 0x00000007 bluescreen, but it doesn't mention any file.

I've removed the hpqkbfiltr.sys file and created a new image of the laptop with no change.

I don't know what I should do next to troubleshoot this issue.

I never had any issue when I created a VM of my old Dell laptop.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi All,

I have a Laptop with

     6 GB RAM,

     300 GB HDD,

     2 CPU (1 socket and 2 cores)

     Windows 7 64 bit OS.

I am having external HDD (2TB capacity with 460 GB free space) which will have the destination folder for the VM.

When I try to convert this using  VMware converter standalone I am getting this following error.

"FAILED: The VSS snapshots cannot be stored because there is not enough space on the source volumes or because the source machine does not have any NTFS volumes. Error code: 2147754783 (0x8004231F)."

I have attached the error log for your reference.

Thanks in advance to all for helping to overcome this issue.

Noob: Converting server that has iSCSI volumes?

$

Hi,

I have an ESXi 4.1 host and I'd like to virtualize a Windows 2003 Server that has several large iSCSI volumes attached that are already on a SAN. What's the best way to handle the iSCSI storage? Do I detach the iSCSI volumes, p2v the server, then attach the volumes to the new VM? Or is the converter smart enough to do that for me? Pointers to a best practices document or example would be great.

Thanks

Hello,

I am using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.1 in order to convert an old VMware Server 2 machine for ESXi 5.5

I clicked the "Convert machine" button, selected "VMware Workstation or other VMware machine" as source type.

As virtual machine file I selected the VMX file.

Clicking next, I get the "Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine" error.

I am using 7SP1 64bit, no firewall nor antivirus.

Thank you,

Francesco

Converter SDK: virtualization from backup image

$

In a disaster recovery tests environment, I need to convert images backup supported by VMware Converter (with 'Convert machine' ), or virtual machines with virtual disk on which a backup has been restored (with 'Configure machine'), with the automation of Converter SDK.

Converter Standalone already works well in this way.

I need, however, the automation of SDK.

VMware's samples show only the virtualization from physical resources, which parameters are configured in the '.properties' file.

I think there's a list of statements to add to the '.properties' file that regards the source image/virtual machine or type of convertion ('convert' or 'configure'), as shown during the Converter Standalone wizard.

Does anyone already follow this way of virtualization?

VMware converter 5.1 very slow (ssl already disabled)

Hello,

I need help very quickly! I have to do a v2v migration of a server.

But the speed of converting is about 6 mb/s which is very slow... (about 1000 GB of Data)

Network-Speed is normal - no issues detected. When try to convert a physical machine, it is much faster!

I already disabled ssl encryption, but still no improvement!

The server must be running on Monday. Do you have any other ideas I can try?

What about using Converter 4.3 (which I read is more performant)

Conversion fails at 1%

My conversion attempts fail at 1% over and over.

Here's my setup:

Source: Windows 2008 R2 x64 "physical" machine (Running on Proxmox on a server). I chose physical machine because Proxmox VMs are not in the supported list for virtual machine importing.

Destination: Local disk on my Windows 7 Machine for use in Workstation 10.0.

Upon conversion fail, Converter pops an error dialog with this text:

Virtualization of [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] failed: an error occurred during the conversion: 'converter.fault.NetworkShareConnectFault'

Standalone converter displays this message: "Error: Unable to parse the configuration file of the destination virtual machine."

Logs attached.

After digging through the community and knowledgebase (and a bit of googling), I tried the following to remedy:

1. Disabled UAC on source machine

2. Disabled firewall on source and destination machines

3. Disabled real-time antivirus protection on source and dest machines

4. Turned off simple file sharing on dest machine

5. Enabling file and printer sharing on dest machine

I've been at this all day long and am ready to throw in the towel. Please help??
