1st time and 1st error

Started 4/19/2013 6:01:18 PM

Failed 4/19/2013 8:18:51 PM

2nd time and 2nd error

Started 4/19/2013 9:55:55 PM

Failed 4/20/2013 2:34:18 AM

Details are its a Server Standard 2003 DC with all updates and running as a active DC. Tried doing a powered on conversion to a new ESXi install I just got running on Friday and the above failed twice 1st time at 49% 2nd time at 50%. The computer had a failed RAID Mirror which prompted this conversion to a more reliable RAID 6 setup running ESXi at a low usage time. The C drive is about 30 gigs of data and D is about 170 gigs of data. I was thinking of maybe moving the D drive data somewhere else and rerunning the process then moving it back, etc. but. Will that idea or a cold conversion be best in this case? Thanks for any help!

Firewall issues with Converter

Anyone used Vmware Converter standalone 5 to move a powered-on VM to another ESX host, with a firewall in between? I'm having a hell of a time. I've opened ports as per kb articles, installed the converter agent manually on the source, but when the conversion runs it instantly fails with "a general system error occurred, unknown exception". Looking at the logs, it suggests SSL might be the problem. I've disabled SSL in the converter-worker.xml file but still no go.

I'm pulling my hair out now, nothing seems to work. Has anyone got any ideas?

RHEL 4 - P2V - Failed with errors.

Hi,

I'm trying to P2V a RHEL 4 server but I'm failing with the following error:

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'InitrdNativePatcher failed to generate initrd image: /usr/lib/vmware-converter/initrdGenRhel.sh failed with return code: 1, and message: * /mnt/p2v-src-root/dev has 2 files No module qla2xxx_conf found for kernel 2.6.9-89.35.1.0.1.ELhugemem, aborting. The whole conversion looks like it nearly finishes but then fails with this errors.

The last few entries in the task list (highlights) is this:

- Error: Unable to reconfigure the destination virtual machine.

- Creating initial ramdisk (initrd).

- Patching the mount point entries in fstab.

- Installing the GRUB boot loader.

- Starting the reconfiguration of the destination virtual machine.

Has anyone here experienced a similar error previously or can point me in the right direction to try and get this resolved. I have a very long list of other RHEL 4 servers that will need to be P2V'd as well so I'd like to get this issue fixed quickly if I am going to have to deal with it everytime I try to P2V a Linux machine.

Thanks for the help!

ubuntu p2v - converter fails generic error

Hello,

I'm new to vmware and I'm trying to teach myself. I have ubuntu 11.10 running on a spare laptop with linux converter server 4.0.1. I have the Converter Standalone Client 4.0.1 installed on a windows 7 machine. I have an ESXi server cluster running 4.1.0 that I'm a superadmin on. I'm trying to use the windows machine to convert the ubuntu machine from physical to virtual. I go the through the wizard and everything looks fine. I click start, it starts, and then stops and disconnects with a very generic error "Error: Unable to create the virtual machine 'ubuntu-test-machine'." no other reason given.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Either documentation is limited or my googling needs work because I'm having a hard time finding info on this. It's either outdated or a little to vague for a beginner. Point me in the right direction and I'm sure I can figure it out.

I appreciate any help. Screenshots attached.

Converting a ridiculously large server

So here's the scenario:  We have a VM sitting on an ESXi 4.1 farm that has 5 2TB RDMs attached. We are migrating off of our current SAN to a new EMC SAN. For the rest of our VMs we are doing vmotions and storage vmotions to move them to our 5.0 farm which is on our current SAN.  That part is no problem. But what do we do for this one? We woud like to get rid of the RDMs and move to standard vmdk files for each drive.

My thoughts are to use converter to do a v2v migration. We did this a few months ago with some "large" VMs but the biggest one topped out at 2.5TB. I ran the hot sync which took 2 full days, and then the final conversion only took 90 minutes or so. So the plan would be for this 10TB monster to run the v2v hot, let it take a week?  maybe more, then during a downtime window run the true-up final conversion. Only problem with this approach is that we have no clue how long it will actually take. There are millions of files on this VM, so trying to guesstimate a conversion time is going to be exactly that, at best.

Any other suggestions on the best way to approach this?  We don't have any SAN replication tools available, so we can't just replicate, switch the LUNs over and keep them as RDMs. We figure since we have to migrate this data we want to get rid of the RDMs as well. Has anyone done a conversion of this size before? Any other ideas?

P2V Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine

Hi All!

I am (for the first time) trying to do a P2V conversion.

Target machine is a remotely located SBS2008.

I have installed the vCenter Converter Client 5.1 on my local laptop

I installed the agent (found in the installation directory on my laptop) on the remote server.

I opened the ports that i found on the vmware site in the remote sites firewall (8089, 139, 445, 9090, 137 and 138)

When i enter the connection details in the convertor i do receive the SSL Cert popup (so there is a connection established), but when i click "ignore" he just presents me: "Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine"

I have been looking around for some howto's or additional info but had a hard time finding it ;-)

Thanks a lot for the feedback!

After looking around the Internet and the community I have seen people mention that I need to use 3.0.3. The issue is though I cant find it to download. I have went to VMware site but they only seem to go back as far as 4.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as always

Hi Guys,

Now i have a problem with how to achieve conversion from VMware Workstation to ESXi in bulk with automation?

I want to write a Python script to get it, but i can't find a method in command lines. I have found that "vcb2p2vXml.exe" and "converter-cli.exe", those files can achieve my goal? And the vcb2p2vXml.exe will use the tool named "VMware Consolidated Backup", but i don't have it, also cannot download it from website.

Can anybody slove my problem? Thanks!

Unable to migrate VM from ESXi 4.1 cluster???

Afternoon all,

I'm trying to migrate some VM's from an existing ESXi 4.1 cluster to a new ESXi 5.1 cluster.

I've installed VMWare Converter 5.1 on the management server at the destination end, and have allowed the relevant firewall ports between the 2 VC servers, as defined in: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1010056

I can load up the Cluster inventory successfully in VMWare Converter, however whenever I select a host, I get:

'Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine.'

Source vm is a Centos 4/5 OS type, with a Centos 5 OS installation. VMWware tools is installed, and I powered the VM down to attempt the migration.

VMWare converter diagnostic logs look like:

2013-05-03T11:38:29.333+01:00 [05116 verbose 'wizardController'] Trying connection to VC server '192.168.150.21' with user 'gavinw'

Hello,

In trying to do a P2V conversion I am getting a very weird kernel error. I am using the 5.1 standalone converter. The error is:

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: ' * got kernel major revision as ERROR:
kernel version has to be in format 2.6.*, version 2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86_64 is not supported (return code 1)'

I have searched and found no information on this error. I have added a screenshot, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello,

I would like to make one of our third party system which is on our physical server to a Virtual machine. The problem is that the third party support says that the license is assigned to the computer hardware so that software can't be copied onto another server. They want to charge us for a re-license if we P2V. So what I want to know is how deep does the P2V go in transferring over the original machine specs.

Deduped Data Not Copied!

Hi - I converted a file server this weekend, which I thought went pretty smoothly. It running Server 2012, and has a C: MBR volume and a D: GPT volume. Windows 2012 dedupe is running on the D: volume.

The D drive was created too large, so using converter I selected it to be 70GB on the destination, down from 200GB. Once the conversion finished no errors were reported by the destination guest, or Converter.

When I look at the files on the destination all the files are the correct size. BUT there is only 8GB of disk space in use on the destination, but there is 33GB of space used on the source. The source reports that there is a 25GB deduplication savings. So it looks like VSS, or converter only copied unique file data, not deduped data during the file level conversion.

Has anyone seen this before, or is this documented anywhere?

Thanks,

    FWSITUser
